Shear waves in colloidal crystals : I. Determination of the elastic modulus

چکیده
2014 Shear waves are excited in a latex sample. One detects the vibrations of the sample using light scattering phenomena (Kossel rings). The amplitude of vibrations of the latex sample, when recorded as a function of the frequency of excitation, presents a series of resonances. Analysis of the resonance peaks allows to determine the elastic modulus of the latex crystal. We study the variation of the elastic modulus as a function of different parameters characteristic of the latex. J. Universal behaviour in the mechanical properties of weakly aggregated colloidal particles†‡
We study the evolution of the elastic shear modulus of weakly aggregated colloidal particles during the onset of a delayed collapse under gravity. The early lifetime is characterised by an elastic shear modulus that increases logarithmically in time, following which the gels experience a catastrophic failure and the elastic modulus drops dramatically. As the gel collapses, various complex behav...
متن کاملTHE EFFECT OF PURE SHEAR ON THE REFLECTION OF PLANE WAVES AT THE BOUNDARY OF AN ELASTIC HALF-SPACE
This paper is concerned with the effect of pure shear on the reflection from a plane boundary of infinitesimal plane waves propagating in a half-space of incompressible isotropic elastic material. For a special class of constitutive laws it is shown that an incident plane harmonic wave propagating in the considered plane gives rise to a surface wave in addition to a reflected wave (with angle o...
متن کاملDiscontinuous Shear Modulus Determines the Glass Transition Temperature
A solid—amorphous or crystalline—is defined by a finite shear modulus while a fluid lacks such. We thus experimentally investigate the elastic properties of a colloidal glass former near the glass transition: Spectroscopy of vibrational excitations yields the dispersion relations of longitudinal and transverse phonons in the glassy state. From the long-wavelength limit of the dispersion relatio...
متن کامل3D mapping of elastic modulus using shear wave optical micro-elastography
Elastography provides a powerful tool for histopathological identification and clinical diagnosis based on information from tissue stiffness. Benefiting from high resolution, three-dimensional (3D), and noninvasive optical coherence tomography (OCT), optical micro-elastography has the ability to determine elastic properties with a resolution of ~10 μm in a 3D specimen. The shear wave velocity m...
